The Plumas County Veterans Collaboration is preparing to host Veterans Stand Downs for both Plumas and Sierra counties.
The Plumas County stand down is slated for Aug. 11 to 12 at the Springs of Hope Christian Fellowship Church at 59 Bell Lane, Quincy. The Sierra County stand down is set for August 26 at the Sierraville Elementary School, 305 Lincoln Street, Sierraville. All three events are from 8 am to 4 pm.
This is the sixth year the veterans’ collaborative has held a stand down for Plumas, and the first for Sierra County.
According to organizer Scott Quade, the original stand down for veterans was modeled after the stand down concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment.
“Stand downs afforded battle-weary soldiers the opportunity to renew their spirit, health, and overall sense of well-being.”
