Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary announces an upcoming blood drive in partnership with Vitalant of Reno. The Portola Blood Drive is set for Oct. 13, noon – 6 p.m. at the Catholic Community Hall at 100 South Pine St.
EPHC Auxiliary reports that patients need blood during surgeries, in cancer treatments, during childbirth complications, and more. “It is critical to keep the shelves stocked with blood,” said Auxiliary representative Pandora Valle. One in seven people who go to the hospital will need blood, she said. A car accident victim may need as many as 100 units of blood during treatment of injuries.
“Please step up, be a hero, make a donation,” said Valle. “One small act of kindness can help up to three lives.”
Donors are cautioned only to come to the donation location if they feel well. On donation day, donors should eat a healthy meal and stay hydrated. To make an appointment, go to http://donors.vitalant.org. When prompted, use either Portola or the ZIP code 96122. Those who need assistance may call (530) 832-0347. Valle reports that it is best to schedule an appointment, although walk-ins will be welcome.
