Joanne Lujan Sargent

Oct. 18, 1947 -- Oct. 9, 2023

Quincy resident Joanne Lujan Sargent passed away at home on Monday, Oct. 9, 2023. Born Oct. 18, 1947, in Alameda, California, her family moved to San Lorenzo in 1954. Joanne grew up with her late mother and father, Charles and Virginia Lujan, and seven siblings. She graduated from Arroyo High School in 1965 and was active in the high school acapella choir for four years. She majored in business management courses, and shortly after graduation, began working for a law firm in Oakland, California.

Joanne married the love of her life, Richard (Rick) Sargent, on June 7, 1969, in Hayward, California. They were married for 48 years.  They knew each other in high school and began dating just before Rick served in Vietnam from 1966 -1967. They began a family with a son Sean and a daughter Regina. The family settled in Pleasanton, before moving to Quincy, California, in 1978.

In 1995, they were blessed with a grandson, Jamie, whom they loved, and who became a constant part of their lives. While Rick pursued his building contractor’s business, Sargent Construction Company, Joanne was a homemaker while working part-time for two attorneys in Quincy. Rick eventually worked for the USDA Plumas National Forest in 1988, and in 1987 Joanne began her 20-year career with Plumas National Forest; in 1989 she became the Forest Supervisor’s secretary, before retiring in 2007.

Joanne is predeceased by her husband Rick (2017); sister Melinda Colburn (2016); and brother Mark (2021).

A Mass of Resurrection will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Nov. 4 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Lawrence Street, Quincy.
