Firefighters on the Plumas National Forest Beckwourth Ranger District planned to burn approximately 70 acres of piles in Lakes Basin Oct. 26, conditions permitting.
The piles are located between Elwell Lodge and Gold Lake Lodge. Ignitions were planned to start around 9:30 a.m., reported PNF Public Information Officer Tamara Schmidt. Ignitions may continue Oct. 27.
The current weather forecast is predicting winds which are expected to keep smoke within Lakes Basin and not impact local communities, said Schmidt.
Smoke is expected to be visible but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Graeagle and Blairsden. Short-duration, minor smoke impacts are possible on neighboring forest roads and Gold Lake Highway.
If weather conditions become unfavorable, or include increased or gusty winds in the area, burning will stop until conditions improve, said Schmidt. Firefighters will be monitoring conditions throughout operations.
