Portola Junior-Senior High School is embarking on a Community Read Project, “like a relaxed, at-your-own-pace book club,” said Portola High English teacher Niecea Freeman. Students, families, and community members of Portola, Graeagle, Clio, Beckwourth, and all other communities serviced by Portola High are invited to participate.
“Want to connect more with the students and what they are learning at PHS?” asks Freeman. “Read a book with us! We invite you to embark on a literary adventure with us this 2023-2024 school year by helping us select a text to read across the community: One Book. One Community.”
Those interested in participating may fill out a survey and select their top two choices for a book that they would read (at their own pace and leisure) with the Portola High community, said Freeman. After reading the book, participants have the opportunity to join Portola High in the spring for an afternoon tea and potluck. During the event, students will lead families and community members in in-depth discussions about book themes and interests, and in making connections to participants’ own unique lives in Plumas County.
