Voters approve Beckwourth Peak Fire District

Cameron, Brown elected to Meadow Valley Fire district

It’s official! Eastern Plumas County voters approved formation of the Beckworth Peak Fire District by a total of 624 yes votes to 191 no votes.

Measure E easily acquired the two-thirds approval required to create a new fire district from four existing fire protection and emergency medical providers now serving Portola, Beckwourth, Gold Mountain/Nakoma and Sierra Valley.

Voters also approved a second measure to levy a special tax of $110 per parcel by 578 votes to 238, according to the Plumas County Elections Office.

In the first-ever election for commissioners to serve on the Meadow Valley Fire Protection District board, Keri Cameron garnered 122 votes to earn one of two open positions. David M. Brown claimed the second seat with 93 votes. Trailing them was Robert Gimbel, who received 80 votes.

Chester Public Utility District’s effort to shore up the financially troubled Chester Fire Department fell short. A ballot measure to approve a special $350 per-parcel special tax garnered 200 yes votes to 381 no votes, failing to receive even a simple majority. Approval required two-thirds majority approval.
