Just in time for holiday gift buying, the Quincy Friends of the Plumas County Library is sponsoring another silent auction at Plumas Bank in Quincy. The auction began Friday, Dec. 1, and closes at noon Friday, Dec. 15.
“This is a great opportunity to find some thoughtful and not-too-expensive gifts for those special people on your list,” said Stephanie Leaf, Friends secretary-treasurer. “Or just treat yourself to an enjoyable way to spend these long winter evenings.”
Leaf reports that the premier offering of this auction is a “magnificent” volume entitled “Norman Rockwell, Artist and Illustrator.” This large format (17 inches by 12 inches), 328-page book is an “incredibly rare and valuable find,” she said. Each page features the illustrations of the iconic, incomparable American artist. What makes this volume so rare and valuable is that it is a special edition, No. 82 of a limited number of copies, signed by Rockwell himself. It is in like-new condition, though it lacks a slipcase. With its slipcase, it would sell for over $700. It is being offered at the auction with a minimum bid of $250.
The auction will also showcase books focusing on California and local history, including “The Shirley Letters.” “Now that Dame Shirley Plaza is safely ours again, this is an opportunity to learn about the plaza’s namesake,” said Leaf. There are also “breathtaking” art books featuring the works of the world’s great museums, and children’s books. “All of these are perfect for gift-giving,” Leaf said.

Another special feature of this auction is a collection of books belonging to and honoring local resident Dr. Linda Cayot, who died in September 2022. Cayot dedicated her professional career — four decades — to tortoise and iguana conservation in the Galápagos Islands. Any funds raised through the auction of her books will be donated to the Galápagos Conservancy. For more information on Cayot and her work, go to http://www.galapagos.org.
In keeping with the spirit of the season, Leaf reports that the auction will include special gifts for some winning bidders. High bidders on several items will receive an additional free book as a way for Friends to say “thank you” for their support.
The Quincy Friends of the Plumas County Library offer their thanks to Plumas Bank and best wishes to everyone for a happy holiday season, said Leaf. Learn more about the group at https://www.facebook.com/quincyfriendslibrary.
