Volcanoes double champs in Greenville basketball tournament

The John Holland Invitational Basketball Tournament drew seven teams to Greenville for three days of competition, culminating in the Chester Volcanoes claiming both the boys and girls championship trophies on Saturday, Nov. 2.

The Chester High School boys team defeated Indian Valley’s Plumas Warriors 68-51. The Warriors, led by seniors Braden Harris and Carson Goss, put up a valiant fight but fell short.

In the championship round for the five girls teams, the Lady Volcanoes bested Surprise Valley 55–27. Big Valley and George Whittle did not send girls’ teams to the tournament.

Teams came from as far away as Happy Camp to participate in the tournament, launched in the 1980s by John Holland, legendary coach of the Greenville Indians basketball team. Competing teams included the Westwood High School Lumberjacks, Big Valley High School Cardinals, Surprise Valley High School Hornets, Happy Camp High School Indians, and the George Whittell High School Warriors boys’ team from Zephyr Cove, Nevada.
