Pile burning planned this week across Plumas National Forest

As of the morning of Dec. 5, firefighters on all three ranger districts of the Plumas National Forest plan to resume pile burning, conditions permitting, with operations expected to continue through this week.

The Beckwourth Ranger District is planning to burn 25 landing piles on approximately 5 acres near Eureka Ridge. Ignitions were expected to start around 11:30 a.m.

Firefighters on the Beckwourth Ranger District do not plan to conduct pile or prescribed burning on Wednesday, Dec. 6, due to predicted winds, but they will be monitoring conditions to continue pile burning in Lakes Basin later in the week.

The Feather River Ranger District plans to treat approximately 691 acres with pile burning near La Porte this week.

Firefighters intended to start ignitions with 10 acres on the Wyandotte Peninsula at Little Grass Valley Reservoir and 176 acres of piles south of La Porte in the St. Louis Project area. An additional 505 acres of piles are planned for treatment this week on the Tamarack Chimney Project above Little Grass Valley Reservoir.

Ignitions this morning were expected to start around 10 a.m. Conditions permitting, ignitions may continue through Friday.

Pile burning will be occurring near roads and will be highly visible, especially in the community of La Porte. Area residents and visitors are asked to use caution driving in the area and watch for increased firefighter traffic.

The Mount Hough Ranger District is planning to burn approximately 21 acres approximately 2 miles up Silver Lake Road, west of Meadow Valley. Firefighters are monitoring conditions for additional pile burning opportunities on the Mount High Ranger District through Friday.

Smoke may be visible but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including La Porte on the Feather River Ranger District and Meadow Valley on the Mount Hough Ranger District. Minor smoke impacts of short duration are possible on La Porte Road and neighboring forest roads near all three ranger districts.

If weather conditions become unfavorable, including increased or gusty winds in the area, burning will stop until conditions improve. Firefighters will be monitoring conditions throughout operations.
