FRC English club holds inaugural murder mystery event

Nightmare Bingo took place at the Shady Oaks Senior Center, where residents competed for the chance to win the Golden Dentures trophy — and competed for a chance to save their lives! On Nov. 1, the English club at Feather River College, the River Writers, held its very first murder mystery game, dinner, and dance, reported club advisor and English professor Dr. Nikki Grose.

The event, planned by the club to increase student engagement, was attended by over 50 students, faculty, and staff. After a pasta dinner prepared by Wildflower Café, guests were invited by the emcee (Grose) to search for and solve clues throughout the show and find out “who done it.”

Players included Betty, a world-class bingo champion (played by Breckyn Shirley); a retired detective (Sean Tillman); a descendent of the Belgian royal bloodline, Adele de Bois-Williams (Evi de Bois); safari hunter Reginald de Bois-Williams (Logan Kingsland); bingo master and ex-convict Barbra Jones (Linda Rose); an Eastern European duke, Nicolas von Vesper (Evan Thorman); the nurse (Alix Lopez); and Betty’s grandson (played by Grose’s son, Aidan Grose-Grow).

Who done it? Club members perform in character to deliver interactive clues.

Students also entered for a chance to win FRC swag, and Grose reported that many students stayed for dancing after the show.

“This event offered the River Writers a chance to collaborate, work as a team, and develop real world skills,” said Grose. She described the event as a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in creativity and develop their leadership and collaboration skills.

“It was also a great community building event,” Grose added, “with students from across the campus coming together to dress up as retirees and use their critical thinking skills to solve the mystery.” She expressed gratitude for the support of the FRC President’s Office and Student Services.
