Supervisors elect leaders for 2024

District 4 Supervisor Greg Hagwood will continue to serve the Plumas County Board of Supervisors as chairman, with District 1 Supervisor Dwight Ceresola accepting the role of vice chair.

The decision was unanimous but it came after deliberation by Ceresola, who represents eastern Plumas County. Ceresola was elected board chairman in January 2023 but stepped down July 25 citing health issues.

At the board’s Jan. 2, 2024, meeting, Supervisor Jeff Engel nominated Ceresola to be board chairman.

“I would like to say yes,” Ceresola said, “but I better not.” His health has improved, he said. But if the medical issues that forced him to step down in July were to return, it could force him to again resign as chairman, Ceresola said.

“I believe I can do the job as vice chairman,” he added.

Supervisor Tom McGowan’s motion to elect Harwood as chair and Ceresola as vice chair was seconded by Supervisor Kevin Goss and approved unanimously.

In other transitions in the county workforce, Sara James resigned as interim county counsel citing family health issues. She was appointed in June following the resignation of former County Counsel Gretchen Stuhr.

“I’ve enjoyed my time as interim county counsel and will support whoever steps into the position full time,” James said. The supervisors appointed Deputy County Counsel Josh Bechtel to serve as interim county counsel.

The position of building director is now held by Michael Coelho following his appointment by the supervisors Jan. 2. Former Plumas County Building Director Charles White resigned in September.

The supervisors also appointed Supervisor Jeff Engel to the solid waste hearing panel along with Bill Davies and Jerry Sipe. Plumas District Hospital CEO JoDee Read was appointed to the Partnership Health Plan of California as Plumas County’s representative.
