Starting Wednesday, Jan. 3, firefighters on the Plumas National Forest Mount Hough Ranger District planned to burn approximately 47 acres of machine piles near Bucks Lake, conditions permitting. The piles are located around Bucks Lake, with the largest concentration located northwest of the lake. Ignitions were expected to start late Thursday morning and possibly continue throughout the week.
Large landing piles are set for ignition. Wet weather, including predicted snow in the coming days, is expected to help conditions while burning the piles.
Bucks Lake is a popular recreation area, even in the winter months. PNF asks area residents and visitors to use caution, watch for increased firefighter traffic in the area and yield or turn around if needed.
Smoke is expected to be visible but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Bucks Lake and Meadow Valley. Minor smoke impacts of short duration are possible on neighboring forest roads and the Oro-Quincy Highway.
If weather conditions become unfavorable, including increased or gusty winds in the area, burning will stop until conditions improve. Firefighters will be monitoring conditions throughout operations and will continue to patrol as needed.
