As the Feather River College Athletic Department gears up for the start of baseball season, head baseball coach Terry Baumgartner reports that his team achieved an overall GPA of 3.31 in the fall 2023 semester.
“All of the baseball coaches are doing an outstanding job helping students focus on academics,” said Kevin Trutna, FRC superintendent/president. He called the players “winners on the field and in the classroom,” and credited staff from assistant coaches to tutors with helping them reach this achievement. The team equated academic achievement with athletic performance, writing “classwork taken care of = free minds on the diamond!” on Instagram.
In the baseball program, 38 of 47 players finished the semester above a 3.0 GPA, as follows:
- 5 players = 4.0 GPA.
- 16 players = 3.50 – 3.99 GPA.
- 17 players = 3.0 – 3.49 GPA.
Baumgartner said he is “very excited” about the start of baseball season. The team’s first game is set for Friday, Jan. 26, at Taft College. When the team plays at home, he said he looks forward to encouraging increased attendance from the local community: “We can’t wait for our first home game so the baseball fans of Quincy can come out and watch us.”
“We have a very young team and they have been working hard for the last five and a half months to develop their skills on and off the field,” said Baumgartner. Starting this week, coaches and players will find out how much their time and effort has allowed them to develop as individuals, he said.
Another exciting aspect of the coming season, Baumgartner said, is seeing “how well our group of student-athletes come together as a team and play for each other, as well as FRC.”
