Eastern Plumas Community Assistance Network exists for one simple reason: “There was a need,” said Dink Rife, EPCAN board president.
Established in 1995 to address the needs of the eastern Plumas region, the group knows the need still exists. In November 2023, EPCAN assisted 462 people from 177 households. Throughout the year, it aided a total of 4,768 people from 1,935 households. When Lisa Peiler, site operations manager, was asked about her dedication to securing contributions for EPCAN, she said, “People need the food.”
Perishable items are distributed on the first and third Friday of each month, with fresh food available, and lines forming by noon. Commodities, including cheese, meat, canned beans and rice, are distributed on the second Thursday of the month.
EPCAN operates three days a week, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, and from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursdays. The organization also provides a three-day food supply once a month to those in need. “We serve everyone who shows up at our door,” said Cathy Churchill, volunteer coordinator.
No preregistration is required to receive assistance, and all records are kept confidential. Caregivers may pick up food on behalf of shut-in or infirm individuals with proper authorization. “We don’t say no,” Rife said.
EPCAN has recently observed a surge in demand and an uptick in individuals requiring assistance. The volunteers attribute this increase to the reduction in COVID relief funds, including food stamps and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. The majority of EPCAN’s food comes from the Northern Nevada Food Bank, which also provides Reno and surrounding areas with resources. This is why donations are vital to the success of EPCAN.
Donations are greatly needed and valued, Rife said. EPCAN accepts unexpired food donations during operating hours. “We rely entirely on donations, and our community is very generous,” Rife said. EPCAN is in the process of obtaining nonprofit status, which is expected to foster increased donations.
EPCAN is supported by a wide variety of local and regional businesses, nonprofit organizations and individuals. It welcomes volunteers, particularly those capable of lifting 50 pounds. Interested individuals can contact Churchill at 530-836-1485. Currently, EPCAN has 15 volunteers but can accommodate more.
