Election 2024: The presidential primary

Plumas voters will select judge, supervisor

On March 5, the 2024 presidential primary election will take place in California. It’s an event that occurs every four years, with the last election in 2020.

Plumas County will be deciding on a new Superior Court judge and a new District 4 county supervisor. Also on the ballot will be Measure A: a three-quarter-cent sales tax to provide revenue to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office.

California voters have sometimes been a bit confused about why we are voting in a March primary instead of a June primary, as we have in past years. In 2017, former California Gov. Jerry Brown signed the Prime Time Primary Act, which moved the California primary election up to the first week of March. The legislation was designed to position the populous state of California to have more influence in determining presidential candidates. The move joined California with other states in Super Tuesday.

In Plumas County, the two contested races will be decided March 5. District 4 Supervisor Greg Hagwood, the incumbent representing the Quincy area, is being challenged by Mimi Hall. The race for Superior Court judge pits William Abramson against W. Wayne Yates Jr. Voters will also decide whether to raise the sales tax to support county law enforcement. The Plumas Sun will post more detailed articles about each of the issues on the March 5 ballot.

The Plumas Sun reached out to Plumas County Clerk/Recorder Marcy Demartile to review the upcoming election process, deadlines and other election information. Here are her responses to the questions asked:
