Three Quincy Junior-Senior High School students challenged Plumas County supervisors Feb. 6 to think about the impact of social media on the mental health of adolescents.
That was the topic of the League of Women Voters of Plumas County’s 2023 Nancy Lund Essay Contest, and the winners attended the supervisors’ meeting to read their essays.

Addison Gay, a Quincy High junior who won the grand prize for juniors and seniors, read first. She was followed by Madeline Blaufuss, a Quincy 10th grader and grand prize winner for freshman and sophomore students.
The league awarded honorable mention for the 11th to 12th grade contest to Daniel Nickerson, who was unable to attend the supervisors’ meeting. Cheyanne Ellison, a Quincy sophomore who won honorable mention for freshman and sophomore students, was the final student to read her essay.
Supervisor Tom McGowan said the impacts of social media are not limited to teenagers. “Adults can also be affected.”
Board of Supervisors Chairman Greg Hagwood recognized the League of Women Voters for its community contributions through both the annual essay contest for students and its public forums for candidates running for local offices.
