Local high school sports games now available online

Modern technology brings local high school sports to fans’ living rooms and devices, thanks to automated cameras and a dedicated streaming platform. Subscribers to the NFHS Network can now view Plumas County games online, both live and on demand, on their phones, tablets, computers and smart TVs.

Jason Hawkins, vice principal and athletic director at Quincy Junior-Senior High School, reported that this is the first year Plumas Unified School District began using the service, starting in the fall. Automated cameras installed in school gyms and other sports facilities make it possible for games to be broadcast and recorded.

“Each school’s participation allows our fans to watch when we are not at home or if something prevents them from attending at home,” said Hawkins. He said almost every school in the Northern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation — where the majority of PUSD sports games are played — uses the NFHS system for their indoor games, football games and other outdoor events.

PUSD high schools in Quincy, Portola, Chester and Greenville will use the system to broadcast all indoor games, said Hawkins. They will also broadcast all football games starting this fall, with the exception of Quincy High home games, which are played at Feather River College.

Hawkins said using the system with volleyball in the fall was “a bit of a learning experience,” and that they’ve had some issues with opposing teams’ cameras not working. But otherwise, he said that to his knowledge the system has been successful so far from a viewing standpoint.

NFHS Network offers both monthly and annual subscription options. To learn more, those interested can visit https://www.nfhsnetwork.com and search for local schools.
