Basket-making class offered in Chester

The Chester Piecemakers Quilt Guild is offering a class on making rope baskets Tuesday, Feb. 13, taught by guild vice president Diane Morrow. The class will be held in the Almanor Recreation Center starting at 10 a.m. and the cost is $20. Those interested can RSVP to Morrow at 530-249-0538.

Morrow explained that the rope baskets are made from three-sixteenths-inch cotton clothesline. The clothesline is wrapped with thin strips of fabric and coiled. The coil is held together using a zigzag stitch with a sewing machine. “The baskets can be large or small and round or oval and short or tall,” she said. They can also be embellished with beads or buttons or other objects.

Morrow has been a member of the guild for over 25 years, and she teaches various classes for the guild. Upcoming guild events include classes taught by Carolyn Kenney and Katherine Kinne, both of Quincy, and Nancy Firth, of Redding.

The Chester Piecemakers Quilt Guild was formed in 1988. The purpose of the guild is to promote the appreciation and techniques of quilt making and related forms of textile art. Organizers report that the guild sponsors quilting activities and educational meetings as well as “fun and fellowship.” The guild members make heart warmer blankets for Chester and Westwood state preschoolers every year for Christmas as well as quilts for hospice and anyone that is in need of the warmth a quilt gives.

The guild’s monthly meeting is set for the day before the class, Feb. 12, at 1 p.m. at the Almanor Recreation Center in Chester. All are welcome.
