Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Union Pacific Railroad continue to respond to a train derailment near Blairsden. Fifteen rail cars, gondolas all carrying coal, derailed Feb. 11 near the Middle Fork Feather River.
Eight of the derailed gondolas settled in the riverbed, 20 feet below the trackline. Three gondolas spilled part of their contents into the river, releasing coal into the water. Rail operations were restored the evening of Feb. 13.
Efforts are ongoing to remove the remaining gondola from the river, and crews continue operations for on-land and in-water coal recovery pending safe working conditions. Investigation into the cause and total amount of coal released into the Feather River is ongoing.
Safety is the No. 1 priority, according to the agencies’ joint commend. Although the work site is in a remote location with limited public accessibility, travelers may see work taking place while traveling to their residences or employment this weekend.
There are no road closures at this time, but the agencies encourage the public to take an alternative route if traveling in the area, if available. Trucks, equipment and trailers may be working near the work site. Signage will be displayed in the area.
“We apologize to pedestrians and motorists for the inconvenience and disruption this may cause,” the agencies stated.
