New nonprofit brings green back to Greenville

First planting event, seedling giveaway set for April 26

Local organizers report that the new nonprofit Dixie Fire Canopy Project is bringing the green back to Greenville and surrounding areas. They are planting established, deciduous trees and pollinator shrubs for people affected by the Dixie Fire.

The group’s goal is to plant four trees and two shrubs on each property, along with providing all the materials needed for tree survival and the planting process. Organizers will be coordinating with private, commercial and public properties to fill the towns devastated by fire with green.

On April 26 from noon to 4 p.m. the group will celebrate Arbor Day by hosting a free seedling tree giveaway and planting. Sierra Pacific Industries is donating 2,000 seedlings; another 1,000 will be donated by the Tiny Pine Foundation. In addition, 50 seedlings will be donated to the Dixie Fire Resource Center for anyone unable to make the event.

Trees will be available to anyone for free on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 2 p.m. at The Spot, 205 Pine St. in Greenville. Live music and food vendors will round out the festivities.

Organizers encourage participants to plant seedlings as soon as possible to enable them to thrive.

April 26 will also mark the group’s kickoff to planting. The Dixie Fire Canopy Project will be planting its very first 10 trees and five shrubs at local businesses surrounding The Spot.

Dixie Fire Canopy Project was established in 2023 and is now a fully legal 501(c)3 nonprofit. Organizers acknowledge the many local individuals who have donated “countless hours of advice and assistance in getting this project off the ground.” To date, the group has received funding from multiple local, regional and national sources, and it also accepts donations from private individuals.
