AmeriCorps Seniors connects older adults ages 55+ with people and organizations that need them the most. Those interested are invited to an upcoming new volunteer orientation for opportunities in Plumas County. The event is set for 2 to 4 p.m. April 4 in the Plumas Rural Services conference room at 711 E. Main St. in Quincy. To RSVP, call 530-898-6642.
The AmeriCorps Seniors program is administered by Passages, a Chico nonprofit, to help older adults become mentors, coaches, companions or community volunteers through the senior companion, foster grandparent and RSVP programs. Volunteers may provide rides to doctor appointments or grocery stores, or go to lunch with others. They may visit with lonely older adults in their home or by phone. Organizers say these volunteers “make friends while making a difference.”
Mileage reimbursement and gas cards are available. Those who income qualify may also receive an hourly stipend.
