Soroptimist International of Quincy reports that it honored McKynlee Gay as February’s Soropti-student at the group’s lunch meeting. The Quincy Junior-Senior High School faculty selected Gay as one of the top seven seniors for her excellence in academics, leadership, activities and community service. She is an active volunteer in the school’s S-Club community service projects. Gay’s achievements in advanced placement courses led to her acceptance into the California Scholarship Federation her junior and senior years.
Gay is a year-round, three-sport athlete playing on the volleyball, basketball and softball teams. She has been awarded all-league honors once for volleyball, once for basketball and twice for softball. She was also chosen as most valuable player for softball in her junior year.
Organizers report that Gay’s very successful senior project was a Special Olympics Young Athletes Program. Gay explained that it was an eight-week program that taught motor, cognitive and social skills to students with special needs. She ran 30-minute lessons three days a week. It incorporated general education students as peer role models and promoted inclusion. She then organized a main event in which the students “proudly and enthusiastically” demonstrated the skills they had learned to family and friends.
Gay said she will attend Feather River College and play softball. She then plans to transfer to a four-year college and continue to play softball while studying criminology. Her future career goals include crime scene investigation or possibly sports psychology.
