Plumas County farmers, food producers invited to planning meeting

The Lost Sierra Food Project announced it is working with regional agriculture organizations and local farmers to plan for the future of food and farming in northeastern California. This initiative is called the Eastside Producers Information Collaborative.

LSFP and the EPIC team are inviting farmers, ranchers, market gardeners, orchardists and local food producers to a food system resiliency meeting April 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds Mineral Building. The goal of the gathering, and this regional partnership, is to increase opportunities for farmers so that they can make a livable wage and continue to provide for their communities for years to come.

During the gathering, folks will introduce themselves and the organization they represent before separating into three breakout groups that will discuss different aspects of this region’s food system in detail: infrastructure and markets, emergency food access planning, and farmer training and education opportunities. LSFP reports that the information from these groups will be used for future grants and proposals to better serve the region. Organizers say there is quite a bit of grant money out there for producers right now and the group hopes to develop collaborative projects to bring financial support into Plumas, Modoc, Lassen and Sierra counties.

LSFP will provide snacks and has funds to reimburse Plumas County farmers for mileage to the meeting. Those interested are asked to RSVP to [email protected] by April 12. A Zoom option is available for those who can’t make it in person.

About the Eastside Producers Information Collaborative

EPIC is a regional planning partnership between the Lost Sierra Food Project, Modoc Harvest, and the Local Area Revitalization Co-op. The group has been meeting since late 2023 and is coordinating with state agencies and statewide nonprofits to identify challenges and opportunities for farmers and agricultural producers in this rural and mountainous region.
