League of Women Voters hosts meet-and-greet

Ever wonder what civic engagement is? Members of the League of Women Voters of Plumas County would be happy to talk about that and other ways of participating in democratic processes.

They are hosting a meet and greet Tuesday, April 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Quincy Provisions (Carey Candy Co.). Beverages are complimentary.

The gathering is designed to inform the public and interested members about this nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, which promotes participation in democracy and the democratic process, said Karen Pierson, a league spokeswoman.

She and other league members will share what the local chapter does, including hosting an annual essay contest on a controversial topic that is of interest to high school students. The topic this year was related to the impact of the use of social media on the mental health of adolescents.

The league also hosts various forums throughout the year, including candidate forums prior to elections and forums regarding other issues of interest to citizens. The organization prides itself on inclusiveness and offers members a social environment where friendships are fostered, Pierson said.

“Just show up at Quincy Provisions April 16. We’ll be happy to provide information on how to get involved,” she said.
