Get ready for kindergarten

PUSD roundup starts April 16

This April, families across Plumas County have an opportunity to prepare their children for kindergarten with ease and excitement, said Plumas Unified School District. PUSD is hosting kindergarten roundups across the communities, allowing families to enroll children in transitional kindergarten or kindergarten.

Following is the schedule for each geographic area. All kindergarten roundups are held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Participants should allow 1.5 hours to complete the process.

  • Chester Elementary: Tuesday, April 16.
  • Greenville Elementary: Thursday, April 18.
  • Quincy Elementary Pioneer campus: Tuesday, April 23.
  • C. Roy Carmichael Elementary in Portola: Thursday, April 25.

All roundups will include local healthcare providers providing free dental, hearing, vision and medical screenings. Among them are Eastern Plumas Healthcare District, Plumas District Hospital, Seneca Healthcare District and Plumas County Public Health, working alongside professionals from PUSD and Head Start. These essential health checks are not only a requirement for school entry but are also offered at no cost thanks to medical community volunteers.

At kindergarten roundup, parents can get all the health screenings required for enrollment done all at the same time without having to make separate doctor appointments for each.

“The support from our medical volunteers provides incredible convenience and ensures that these necessary screenings are accessible to all,” said PUSD lead school nurse Emilee Pruitt. “We are committed to helping every family in Plumas County ensure their child is healthy and ready for their first memorable day of school.”

The roundups also serve as a perfect chance for children and their families to visit their future school campuses, meet their future teachers and staff, and connect with community resources including local healthcare providers and community organizations like Rotary clubs and parent groups.

To streamline the process, Pruitt recommends that parents preregister their children online at the PUSD registration portal. For kindergarten, children must be age 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2024. For transitional kindergarten, eligibility includes children turning 5 between Sept. 2, 2024, and June 2, 2025.
