The Chester Junior-Senior High School Volcanoes baseball team continued league play April 16 at Redding Christian, falling to the Lions 9-3. This marked the team’s first league loss and broke a six-game winning streak. The Vols stood at 2-1 in league play after losing to Redding Christian with an overall record of 9-5.
The Vols rebounded three days later hosting the Burney Raiders. Assistant coach George Wellman reported that the Vols prevailed 11-3 with an outstanding pitching performance by Caiden Clark. Clark pitched a complete seven-inning game, giving up two earned runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out 13 on 100 pitches. Clark also helped his cause going 2-4 batting with a double and two RBIs.
The Raiders jump-started the first inning with three hits and two runs. Clark settled in quickly thereafter, only allowing two hits and one run over the next six innings. In the bottom of the first the Vols pushed over four runs to take a 4-2 lead and were firing on all cylinders. The Vols added a run in the bottom of the second, five runs in the bottom of the fifth and one run in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 11-3 lead.
Jax Holland led a 15-hit attack by the Vols going 3-3 with two doubles, one RBI, one walk, two scores and a stolen base. The Clark brothers, Caiden and Chase, combined for four hits, two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored. Kooper Clark pounded out two hits, one a double, and scored two runs with two stolen bases. Jacob Dowling went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs and Grady Klimek slapped two singles and drove in two runs on a 2-4 effort.
Callan Wiseman doubled and drove in one run, and walked once. Uly Bugarin, in his first start of the season, had a hit, walked and scored a run. Talon Pleau scored one run, drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and stole two bases.
The Vols improved their league record to 3-1 and now stand with an overall record of 10-5.
“Worthy of mentioning, the Vols committed only one error in the field and the catching duo of Kooper Clark and Chase Clark (not related) over the last five games has been excellent,” said Wellman. “Minimal passed balls and taking command of the pitchers has been outstanding.”
