Open house addresses upcoming roadway improvement project

Caltrans and the Mercer-Fraser Co. invite everyone to join them for a preconstruction open house from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at the Portola branch of the Plumas County Library, located at 34 Third Ave. The event is focused on the Cromberg Combined Project.

The Cromberg Combined Project in Plumas County is on State Route 70 from just west of Cromberg to east of Portola. This project will reduce distressed roadway, improve ride quality, extend the pavement life for a minimum of 20 years and improve safety for all modes of transportation.

The existing pavement through the project limits has exceeded its service life, according to Caltrans. Currently, less than 10% of the pavement is in good condition. The roadway exhibits poor ride quality, and maintenance measures are no longer cost-effective. Many of the existing culverts are undersized or have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced.

The project includes rehabilitating the roadway, repairing or replacing culverts, upgrading guardrails and bridge railings, and bringing pedestrian facilities into compliance with Americans with Disabilities Act standards. Construction is expected to start in June and last three seasons.
