On May 23, the Feather River Resource Conservation District and partners will host a screening of two short films: “I’m a Burner” and “One Word Sawalmem.” Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with watershed stewards, including Trina Cunningham and Debbie Franco. The free event will take place at the West End Theatre in Quincy at 7:30 p.m.
In “I’m a Burner,” Trina Cunningham shares her Mountain Maidu elders’ wisdom about fire by teaching a small group of non-native firefighters how to conduct a cultural burn.
Finalist of the Tribeca Film Institute short film program, “One Word Sawalmem” offers an intimate taste of indigenous worldview through the personal story of Michael, a young Winnemem Wintu man. For Michael, sawalmem, meaning sacred water in his ancestral language, represents an entire worldview, a vital vision for healing the world and for healing from the legacy of the Shasta Dam that, since the 1940s, has harmed salmon, the Sacramento River and the Winnemem Wintu people of Shasta Mountain.
Attendees are invited to learn, share and network with natural resource professionals, land managers and indigenous stewards from the region at this event.
The Feather River Resource Conservation District, Watershed Research and Training Center and UC Cooperative Extension received funding from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to host this screening.
