Quincy Firewise welcomes burn boss Bill Jacks

The monthly Quincy Firewise meeting will be held Wednesday evening, May 22, at 5 p.m. at the West End Theatre in Quincy. Attendees enter through Quintopia. This month’s speaker is Bill Jacks. Jacks’ expertise in prescribed fire led him to become a California state certified prescribed fire burn boss in 2023. In the same year, he assumed the position of executive director of the Terra Fuego Resource Foundation.

During the meeting, participants will discuss how a Firewise community can help protect forests and structures for future generations by prioritizing prescribed fire on Plumas County private properties in preparation for landscape-scale prescribed fire. Regarding frequent prescribed fire, topics include the following:

  • Wildfire resiliency effects.
  • Critical ecological stewardship process.
  • Forest-human symbiotic relationship. How are fire-adapted forests dependent on humans, and how are humans dependent on the forest?
  • Culture. Working out of “fire debt” toward a culture that encourages fire and resembles Native American ancestral traditional burning practices.
  • Strategy, planning, partners, letters of commitment, community organization, grants and implementation.

Quincy Firewise is a local volunteer group making efforts to create a more fire aware and fire prepared community. Members invite all Quincy residents, as well as residents from surrounding areas and other Firewise communities, to join them the fourth Wednesday of every month from 5 to 6 p.m. at the West End Theatre.

In addition to monthly guest speakers, the group provides up-to-date information on home/property insurance, evacuation preparedness, home hardening tips, and home ignition zone design. Members also offer peer-to-peer home consultation signups to assist residents’ efforts in home hardening and hazardous fuel reduction and removal.
