Workshop teaches bike riders to stay healthy, pain-free

The Lost Sierra Composite Mountain Bike Team announces it is hosting a public workshop for staying healthy and pain free both on and off the bike. Dr. Spencer Cruttenden, a chiropractor and sports medicine specialist, will be presenting the workshop Wednesday, May 29, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Gansner Park in Quincy. Cruttenden has treated patients from professional world cup racers to weekend warriors over the last 15 years in his Truckee and Portola offices.

Organizers say this event is aimed at cyclists looking to address pain on the bike, avoid it in the future, or improve performance and enjoyment while riding. The class is suitable for all ages, biking abilities and fitness levels. Participants are asked to bring a yoga mat if they have one, and to wear clothes they can move in. The event is donation based, and all proceeds support the nonprofit Lost Sierra Composite Mountain Bike Team.

The session will focus on the following topics:

  • Guided self-evaluation for asymmetries and weaknesses on the bike.
  • Exercises for building strength, endurance and mobility for pain-free riding.
  • Common injuries in mountain biking and how to recognize and treat them.
  • Tips for improving position on the bike to reduce pain and injury.
  • A take-home fitness routine to improve cycling performance and prevent injury.
  • A question-and-answer period to address specific issues.
