The Eastern Plumas Health Care Auxiliary is hosting a blood drive June 14 in Portola, at the Catholic Community Hall, 100 S. Pine St. The event will run from noon to 6 p.m. The auxiliary reports that it has hosted these events for several years. This event is presented through Vitalant, of Reno.
Organizers say blood donations have drastically declined. As Father’s Day approaches, the need for blood has increased. “Dads and other patients desperately need blood donors ASAP,” say organizers. “This week, celebrate the dad or father figure in your life, or honor the memory of one, by giving blood, the most meaningful gift of all.”
On donation day, organizers instruct donors to do the following:
- Bring their ID.
- Eat a healthy, low-fat meal within two hours ahead of the donation.
- Drink eight to 16 ounces of water or a sports drink.
- The day before donating, eat a snack or a meal that’s on the salty side, like salted nuts or a can of soup. Those donating blood lose about a gram of salt. Replacing some of that salt ahead of time helps keep blood pressure normal and can improve the donation experience.
Organizers encourage everyone to donate and share the donation information with others. Appointments are preferred, although some walk-in spots may be available. To schedule an appointment, go to http://www.donors.Vitalant.org and search blood drive code: Portola. For assistance, those interested can call Vitalant of Reno at 775-258-4825.
