Friends of Plumas Wilderness and Plumas Audubon Society announce the final event in the Cultivating Connectivity speaker series, focusing on aquatic connectivity in the upper Feather River watershed, on Wednesday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at the Almanor Recreation Building, 451 Meadowbrook Loop in Chester. The presentation is free to attend.
Featured speakers are Jason Kindopp, from the California Department of Water Resources, and Vincent Rogers, from the Feather River Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Kindopp will present on the feasibility study evaluating the potential for salmon reintroduction to the North Fork Feather River watershed above Lake Almanor, which is looking at possible salmon reintroduction in the Almanor Basin. He will discuss the objectives, approach, current activities and timeline for the feasibility study.
Rogers will discuss the programs, activities and efforts of Feather River Trout Unlimited, the upper Feather River basinwide native fish restoration and improvement strategy, and the concepts of ecological complexity, network dynamics and aquatic connectivity, as well as the future resilience of the North Fork Feather River and Almanor Basin fisheries.
Maintaining aquatic connectivity is crucial to the overall resilience of the upper Feather River watershed, say organizers, providing numerous ecosystem services such as supporting species migration, nutrient cycling, sediment transport and water quality maintenance, to the benefit of both natural and human communities alike.
Following the presentations there will be a short question-and-answer session, followed by an optional outing to the monitoring site for the feasibility study. Should attendees wish to visit the study site, a capable, high-clearance vehicle is recommended for travel on gravel/dirt roads. The site is approximately 2.6 miles from the Almanor Recreation Building.
