Summer Reading Program now underway countywide

The Plumas County Library reports that the theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program is “Read. Renew. Repeat.” The program is open to children 0 to 18 years of age, and includes two components: a Reading Challenge and special live presentations. Kids can participate in either or both. The Summer Reading Program is offered at all Plumas County Library branches: Chester, Greenville, Quincy and Portola.

Reading Challenge

The Reading Challenge runs through Aug. 24 at all library branches. Participants set a realistic weekly reading goal for themselves, often with the help of parents. It can be in terms of numbers of books, numbers of pages, time increments — whatever works best for the individual. For children too young to read for themselves, the goal can be set for being read to by a caregiver.

Reading logs are available at each branch. Each week the goal is reached, kids can bring in their logs to their local branch to be marked completed and receive a prize. Participants also are given a prize ticket to fill out to be entered into a drawing for a gift card, one for each branch, to be held at the conclusion of the program in August. One prize and one drawing entry are available per child per week.

“Even if families are only able to participate for one or two weeks during the summer, that’s great, and we strongly encourage you to join in!” say organizers.

Live presentations

As part of the Summer Reading Program, each branch will also feature four live presentations during the summer, offering hands-on activities, crafts, music, special guest presenters and fun. The themes for these presentations will vary, but they are aimed at kids of all ages. Specific dates for these will be announced soon.

Kids are not required to participate in the Reading Challenge to attend the presentations, nor do they have to attend the presentations to participate in the Reading Challenge. “But we sure hope you can take advantage of all of the fun!” say organizers.
