At the end of May, Feather River College in Quincy held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2024, the 54th graduating class for the college. Kevin Trutna, FRC’s superintendent/president, said this class “will go down as one of the most accomplished classes in FRC history.” He pointed out that students earned national recognition scholarships as well as proved themselves some of the top students in California.
“Athletically, FRC showed that the small college in the mountains can compete with all schools, winning the second state championship in FRC history with their victory in beach volleyball,” said Trutna. “These graduates came to FRC from the pandemic and showed their perseverance earning a college degree. The entire FRC family is proud of the graduates.”

FRC proudly honored 80 graduates from the Incarcerated Student Program, said Trutna, as they have chosen to improve their lives through education while incarcerated. One ISP graduate participated in the graduation ceremony. Trutna pointed out that FRC will always welcome any ISP graduate during any future graduation upon parole.
Overall there are 93 female graduates and 123 male graduates. Seven graduates marked “other” or did not disclose. The youngest graduate was 19 years old; the oldest graduate was 75 years young.
The most popular degree, received by 44 people, was the associate of arts for transfer in sociology. In second place, with 37 graduates, was general studies: social and behavioral sciences. University studies in agriculture came in third with 19 associate degrees.
The most popular certificate, 51% of all certificates received, was the California State University breadth certificate with 69 recipients. Small business management was the second most popular certificate, with 29 graduates. A certificate in economics was the third most popular certificate awarded, with 6 graduates.
What accomplishments did the Class of 2024 achieve? Among other achievements, Trutna pointed out the following:
- Men’s soccer earned the highest team grade-point average in the state.
- 10 students earned S-STEM scholarships.
- The volleyball team won the Golden Valley Conference championship, producing the conference’s most valuable player and an all-American player, on its way to a second-place finish in the California Community College Athletic Association state championship.
- A first-ever cultural underburn was held on campus.
- Melanie Coats and Scarlet Taskey both earned first team all-California Phi Theta Kappa academic statewide honors.
- The baseball team won the Golden Valley Conference championship.
- Evi de Bois earned a Jack Kent Cooke scholarship, one of only 60 awards nationally.
- An FRC team placed third at the National Science Foundation Innovation Challenge.
- One graduate served in the military.
- The beach volleyball team won the Golden Valley Conference, with the pair of Abby Cogburn and Franny Martins placing third in the 3C2A state championship, while the FRC team combined to win the overall 3C2A state championship.
- The rodeo team produced winners in men’s all-around competition.
- 149 students qualified for membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
