Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship reports that this season’s first youth crew headed up to Mount Hough on June 17 for the first day in the field, working on the Tollgate trail. The group of local teens will be in the field four days a week for four weeks, working on various projects in the Plumas, Lassen and Tahoe national forests.
SBTS says youth crew members ages 14 to 18 foster a connection with public lands in their backyard under the supervision of adult leaders who are well-versed in backcountry safety and trail restoration. The program promotes community pride, sustainable outdoor recreation practices and the development of lifelong backcountry and trail-building skills, say organizers. Participants in this program also have the opportunity to earn Feather River College Outdoor Recreation Leadership Program credits and certifications through training and application of trail-building skills.
A second youth crew will begin work July 22. “We’re excited to help guide and teach future trail stewards of the Lost Sierra!” say organizers. For more details on the program, visit sierratrails.org/student-trail-crew.
