For candidates seeking election to a local office in November 2024, the filing date is nigh: Monday, July 15. Candidates have until Friday, Aug. 9, to file paperwork, said Marcy DeMartile, county clerk-recorder and registrar of voters.
Board positions in several districts in Plumas County and in Portola will be open and up for election, including the following:
- Feather River College Board of Trustees, three positions.
- Plumas Unified School District, three positions.
- Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District, four positions.
- Eastern Plumas Health Care District.
- Plumas District Hospital.
- Seneca Health Care District.
- Portola City Council.
Voters will also elect a United States president, senators and other officials on the national and state level. Plumas County ballots for the Nov. 5 election will be mailed Oct. 7.
Geographic restrictions
Candidates for trustee positions for both PUSD and SPJUSD must be registered voters and live within the specific trustee area of Sierra or Plumas county. Candidates for directors for all three hospital districts must also be registered voters who live within the boundaries of each specific hospital district.
Candidates for the Portola City Council and city treasurer positions must be registered voters residing within the boundaries of the City of Portola.
Check voter registration
DeMartile urged voters countywide to check their registration. Those who have moved — even across the street — must re-register with the elections office, she said.
“Any time you move your physical location you are required to re-register,” DeMartile said.
Voters can have their ballots mailed to a seasonal address, which does not involve changing their registration, she said.
“But don’t wait until Oct. 20 to tell us your seasonal address,” said DeMartile. With ballots going out Oct. 7, the sooner a voter notifies the elections office of any changes the better, she said.
DeMartile urged both voters and candidates for local office to contact the elections office.
“Call us! Come in!” she said.
