July 14: Jack and Jill Tournament

The Graeagle Men’s Golf Association reported its Jack and Jill Tournament was played on a very pleasant Sunday, July 14, with temperatures in the mid 80s. Thirty-six players made up nine foursomes divided into two flights. Starting time was a 9 a.m. shotgun, and the format was Modified Scotch Chapman (two-person teams) 18-hole net stroke play. In this format both players tee off, then players hits their partner’s ball for the second shot, then the team picks the better ball and plays alternate shots until the ball is holed.

Winners in the first flight were as follows:

  • First place: Bill Harrison and Cynthia Baldwin with a net score of 62.
  • Second place: Greg and Kris Sutton with a net score of 63.
  • Third place: Gene and Kathy Carr with a net score of 66.

Winners in the second flight were as follows:

  • First place: Dennis and Alaine Flynn with a net score of 67.
  • Second place: Jim Oster and Cheryl Brennan with a net score of 68.
  • Third place: Ken and Dottie Hattich with a net score of 72.

Play was followed by dinner and beverages at the Graeagle picnic grounds. Organizers report that the men’s club barbecue team members outdid themselves again and the beverage specialists made for a great evening.

July 17: Wednesday Play Day

Graeagle Men’s Golf Association’s Wednesday, July 17, Play Day saw nineteen players compete in an odd and even format, plus skins. In this format both net balls count on the odd-numbered holes, and the best net ball counts on the even-numbered holes.

First place was won by Paul Senft and Mark Yuill with a net score of 100. Second place was won by the team of Ron Eaton and Tony Pehle with a net score of 102. Third place was a tie between the team of Lawrence Randel/Bob Laxaque and Jim Oster/Norm Nichols with net scores of 103.

There were three skins awarded: Don Judson had a net 2 on the fourth hole, John Grasso had a net 2 on the 14th hole and Lawrence Randel had a net 2 on the 15th hole.

July 18: Add ‘Em Up, Ace of Aces qualifier

Twenty-two Graeagle Meadows Women’s Golf Club players braved the heat to compete in the July 18 monthly Ace of Aces qualifier and the game of the day, Add ‘Em Up. Organizers congratulate July’s Ace of Aces qualifiers: Cynthia Baldwin, low gross, with a gross score of 85; and Mikie Burdick, low net, with a net score of 65. They will participate in the annual Ace of Aces Playoff at the end of the season.

In Add ‘Em Up the scores on all par 3s and par 5s count on the front nine holes, and on the back nine the scores on all par 4s are counted (par on each of those holes adds up to 36).

First flight winners were as follows:

  • First place low gross: Cynthia Baldwin with a gross game score of 42.
  • Second place low gross: Cindy Hannah (49).
  • Third place low gross, in a card-off: Holly Anderson (51).
  • First place low net: Tina Humphreys, in a card-off, with a net game score of 32.
  • Second place low net: Darlene Gibaut (also 32).
  • Third place low net: Susan Anderson (36).

Second flight winners were as follows:

  • First place low gross: Mikie Burdick with a gross score of 50.
  • Second place low gross: Cheryl Brennan (53).
  • Third place low gross: Shelly Drake (58).
  • First place low net: Nancy Linch (net 35).
  • Second place low net, in a card-off: Dee Walker (36).
  • Third place low net: Cheryl Brennan (also 36).

Organizers report chip-ins galore: Darlene Gibaut had two, and Holly Anderson, Mikie Burdick, Cathy Churchill and Alaine Flynn had one each. “Notice how chip-ins improve the outcome,” say organizers. “Most who chipped in also won in the tournament.”

July 19: Friday Play Day

Friday, July 19, saw 16 Graeagle Men’s Golf Association players compete as two-man teams in a format called 9&9. In this format, after each hole, the team selects which net score will be used for the team score. During the round each team member’s score must be used nine times.

First place was won by the team of Dan Friedman and Mark Yuill with a net score of 59. In second place was the team of Chuck Hein and Jack Gilbert with a net score of 63.
