Larry Leiber passed away peacefully at home on the morning of June 14, 2024. His family and caregivers took care of him until he went to his Eternal Home. He was 90 years old.
Larry was born on April 8, 1934, to Wesley and Vera Leiber in Wahoo, Nebraska. Larry grew up in Wahoo, became a lifelong Nebraska Cornhusker college football team fan and attended games in Lincoln as a teenager. in his youth, Larry also loved to squirrel hunt and catfish with his father Wesley and his uncles.
After graduating from high school, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed in Long Beach and toured the South Pacific on the ship USS Philippine Sea. Later, while stationed in San Francisco, Larry and one of his sailor friends traveled to Graeagle, California, to visit his friend’s girlfriend. Once there, Larry got his first visit to beautiful Plumas County, and he never forgot it.
While stationed in Long Beach, he met his wife Estelle on a double date. They were married in 1957 and celebrated 65 years of marriage in 2022.
After the Navy, Larry worked various jobs until he found his future vocation as a law enforcement officer, starting in Banning, California. A few years later, while on a vacation in Plumas County with Estelle and their three children, Larry applied for a job opening for a deputy at the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office. He got the job and served the public as a deputy and later as a sergeant from 1965 to 1987. In 1987, Larry retired and soon started his own business as a civil process server, which he worked for 20 years until he finally retired again.
Larry loved to hunt and fish when he moved to Quincy, where he lived for 59 years. He also loved to travel around the United States, taking trips to Hawaii, Florida, Missouri, Nebraska, and Mexico. He loved the desert and found a special place at Cottonwood Cove on Lake Mohave in Nevada, which continues to be a family vacation spot.
Larry was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He had many friends and acquaintances in Plumas County and beyond. He was known as a quiet, kind, and friendly person. He had a strong faith in God.
His beloved wife Estelle preceded him in death in 2022. Larry is survived by his children: Lori Simpson (Marvin), Lynda Brown (Dale), Lisa Wallace (Damon), and Larry W. Leiber (Stacey); beloved grandchildren Joseph Mosinski, Kelly Mosinski, Carina Retallack, Jesse Wallace, Joshua Leiber, Mikayla Leiber, and Jake Wallace; beloved great-grandchildren Emerson, Violet, Milo, and Leo. His beloved grandson Matthew Brown preceded him in death in 2014.
A memorial service will take place at Meadow Valley Community Church in Meadow Valley, California, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306. Arrangements are made by Blair Mortuary. The final resting place is at East Lawn Cemetery.
