Highway 32 now open; road restoration underway

UPDATE: As of Aug. 19, highway status is as follows:

  • State Route 89: closed between the junction with State Route 36 and the southern boundary with Lassen Volcanic National Park
  • State Route 32: open
  • State Route 36: open
  • State Route 172: closed between the west junction with State Route 36 in Mineral to Hole in the Ground Road

The California Department of Transportation District 2 and contractor J.F. Shea Co. report they are conducting emergency restoration operations on portions of state routes 32, 36 and 172 stemming from the Park Fire. The fire, which started July 24, has burned 429,263 acres and is currently 49% contained.

As of Aug. 15, State Route 32 has reopened in the Park Fire area. Caltrans said motorists should plan for areas of one-way traffic control for emergency restoration efforts. Highway 32 is a primary access route between northern Plumas County and points west. State Route 36 remains closed between the west junction with State Route 172 in Mineral and the junction with State Route 32. State Route 172 also remains fully closed from the junctions with State Route 36 in Mineral and near Mill Creek.

Caltrans reports that the Park Fire has caused damage to state property in District 2 on SR 36 from just west of The Dales through the east junction with SR 172 in Mill Creek, on SR 32 between the Butte/Tehama county Line and Deer Creek and on SR 172 in multiple areas. Emergency restoration efforts include hazard tree removal and disposal, guardrail repair, erosion control and sign replacement.

Project information and updates are available on social media and the District 2 webpage. The public can also call 530-225-3426 during working hours or send an email to [email protected]. Updated highway conditions for California can be found on QuickMap and on One-Stop-Shop for the Western United States.
