The Plumas County Fire Safe Council reports that applications will open Nov. 1 for the 2025 round of treatment under the Senior Disabled Defensible Space Clearance Assistance Program. This program is open to Plumas County residents over 65 years of age and residents with a disability. The council points out that applying online helps capture more accurate data about program participants and their needs, which is useful for securing grant money to keep the program funded.
Under the program, the council provides a free consultation to determine what work is necessary to meet California’s Defensible Space Law under Public Resources Code 4291. The council then procures bids from qualified and insured contractors to provide up to $1,500 in service by working from the home and driveway outward.
Program manager Tommy Brenzovich reports that the crew from High Sierra Fire, a fire prevention and vegetation management services company, has been making its way across the county performing this year’s defensible space treatments. They are well over halfway through the first batch of clients and the work they have been doing “has been looking very good,” he said.
High Sierra Fire has been able to move an additional crew from its operations in Lassen County to help with treatments in Plumas County. Brenzovich said he anticipates progress to pick up as the two crews work their way through the Quincy area, followed by Indian Valley, Genesee and the Lake Almanor Basin. He assures those who signed up later in the season that “help is on the way.”
