Argentine Rock Lookout Repair Group seeks volunteers

The Argentine Rock Lookout Repair Group reports it is looking for some strong workers for some tough work on the old lookout in October. The group is making progress on repairing the stairs up to the lookout, and needs people to haul some heavy steel up the path from the parking area. It’s all part of the larger plan to restore the lookout for everyone to use, say organizers.

“We’ve got some heavy chunks of steel that need to meander up that hill, and they won’t do so by themselves,” said Jeff Greef, chairman of the group. “But with six or eight strong bodies, they’ll float up there like butterflies.”

The group has scheduled the steel-hauling day for Monday, Oct. 7, and then a second day for other work Saturday, Oct. 12. “Monday is the tough day, then on Saturday we’ll have some lighter stuff to haul and do a little carpentry. Bring your saw and hammer,” said Greef.

The Argentine Rock Lookout Group has been working gradually on repairing the old lookout on Grizzly Ridge overlooking Quincy for several years now. Members secured a Forest Service grant to pay for materials, and with volunteer help poured concrete last year for new steel stairs. “That concrete was a bear,” said Greef, with a somewhat pained wince. “But we’re past that now.”

When repaired, the lookout will probably be used as a vacation rental for anyone to stay overnight. “Imagine sippin’ your coffee at 6 a.m. at Argentine — just you and the birds,” said Greef. “But first, we gotta fix it.”

Those who wish to help on Oct. 7 or 12 can contact Greef at 530-616-9031 or [email protected].
