Sierra Valley Preserve full moon hike set for Oct. 18

The Feather River Land Trust invites the community to join the Full Moon Howlers hiking group to discover the magic of hiking in the Sierra Valley Preserve at night while the moon is at its fullest. An upcoming full moon hike features 4 miles of family-friendly, easy trails under a full moon and blanket of stars.

Participants meet at 7 p.m. at the north entrance to the Sierra Valley Preserve. Attendees should bring hiking boots, warm layers and headlamps. Registration for this free event is available online.

Organizers say this hike is perfect for all experience levels, and participants should feel comfortable walking 4 miles round trip at night on generally flat but sometimes uneven surfaces. Participants will learn about the Sierra Valley Preserve and the creatures that inhabit it, along with the phases and names of the moon.

Parents must attend with children under 16 and must print and fill out the liability form they will receive in their confirmation email.

About the Graeagle Full Moon Howlers

The Graeagle Full Moon Howlers is a group that hikes, kayaks or snowshoes to see full moons in the Graeagle area. Organizers say this is an informal group of folks getting outside together.

About the Sierra Valley Preserve and Nature Center

Since 2003, the Feather River Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy and the Northern Sierra Partnership have worked together to create the Sierra Valley Preserve: 2,575 acres of protected land in California’s largest mountain valley. This biodiversity hotspot is at the headwaters of the wild and scenic Middle Fork Feather River and a key stop along the Pacific Flyway. FRLT is now establishing the Sierra Valley Preserve as a hub for nature-based recreation and learning for visitors and locals alike. Plans include new trails, interpretive signage, picnic areas and a new nature center featuring a variety of educational programs and activities.
