Feather River Land Trust announces the inaugural meeting of its first-ever Nature Journaling Club. Inspired by John Muir Laws‘ practice of connecting to the natural world by putting pen to paper, club organizers say participants will visit FRLT’s five public preserves over the course of a year.
The first meeting is set for Oct. 19 at the Heart K Ranch, 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will sketch seasonal views, learn about the landscape and meet and journal with new people. For this inaugural meeting, organizers will begin the day by discussing group/club processes for formation. Then, as Laws would say, everyone will put in some “pencil miles” and do some guided/prompted drawing. A potluck follows the meeting for those who would like to participate.
Those interested can sign up online.
Participants should bring the following:
- Notebook or journal, graphite pencils, colored pencils, clipboard, and any other preferred art materials
- Water bottle
- Sun protection
- Layered clothing
- Closed-toe, sturdy shoes
- Chair to sit in
- (Optional) a potluck lunch dish to share and personal plates, cups, utensils, etc.
Free and low-cost resources from Laws are available at wildwonder.org.
About nature journaling
Nature journaling is a worldwide movement that integrates art, science and nature exploration. The practice can make participants better observers and naturalists, and open a world of beauty and discovery. No artistic experience is needed. Participants learn how to keep their own nature journals and make using them their habit.
