Plumas Audubon Society hosts fall events

Birdability set for Oct. 26; bat talk to be held Nov. 16

Plumas Audubon Society announces it is hosting numerous events this fall.

Birdability

Plumas Audubon Society will host a Birdability event Saturday, Oct. 26, located around the Quincy Junior-Senior High School in honor of Birdability Week.

Birdability Week is an annual celebration dedicated to birders with disabilities and other health concerns. The goal of this event is to introduce birding to those that don’t feel it’s an activity suited to their specific needs and to ensure that birding is a joyful and enriching experience for everyone, say organizers.

Participants can meet at the Quincy Junior-Senior High School parking lot, where four options for birding will be detailed and attendees can choose their adventure. Binoculars will be available to borrow.

Plumas Audubon Society’s event will include several options for all abilities:

  • A stationary car-accessible spotting scope will be set up by the solar panels overlooking American Valley.
  • Two “walking” options will be available: one paved wheelchair-accessible option along the bike path from the high school lower parking lot to the Learning Landscapes classroom, and an easy flat-terrain dirt path option from Learning Landscapes to the spotting scope at the solar panels. Both options are under a quarter of a mile long.
  • At the Learning Landscapes organizers will have a seating area set up for stationary birding and “bird listening” for those with visual impairments or who might otherwise have trouble spotting the birds.

There will also be shade with crafts and coloring pages for neurodivergent brains that need something to do while waiting for birds to appear.

Northern California bats presentation

Plumas Audubon Society will host NorCalBats in Quincy on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Plumas County Library for participants to learn about bats and their importance. Learning about the ecosystem services bats provide and using that knowledge to inform others in turn helps to protect our natural world, say organizers.

The presentation will dispel misconceptions about bats and discuss how the work of NorCalBats helps to save these highly valuable mammals with education and rescue. In addition to the presentation, attendees will get an opportunity to view up to three local species up close and in person.

The cost of admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Preregistration is required due to limited space.

NorCalBats is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of bats throughout Northern California. In addition, the group is committed to public education regarding the environmental benefits of bats and dispelling fears and myths that lead to the death of roosts and colonies. Located in the Sacramento Valley, trained volunteers care for injured and orphaned bats throughout the valley and surrounding foothills. NorCalBats is funded entirely through donations and presentations. They do not receive any funding from any state or federal agency or major corporation. More information is available at http://www.norcalbats.org.
