Plumas County Tourism reports that representatives from the organization attended the Visit California Media Reception Oct. 10 at the Clipper’s Intuit Arena in Los Angeles, CA. Plumas County was one of 47 counties at the event, along with 87 representatives from the media present to hear the stories of destinations throughout California.
“Many were not aware of Plumas County and where we are located, yet they were excited to have a new place to visit and write about,” said Katherine Sansone, marketing director of PCT. Those who stopped by to visit received a press kit, a set of picturesque postcards and a Plumas Knot, donated by Carey Candy Co.

Some of the media organizations that expressed interest in Plumas County included the Los Angeles Times, KABC TV, Orange County Register, Bicyclist Magazine, Pasadena Now, VIA and FoodBeast, along several mommy magazines looking for family-friendly destinations. Visitors were impressed that Plumas still boasts wide open spaces for biking/hiking, no traffic and starlit skies — an anomaly in Los Angeles, said Sansone.
This is not the first such media reception PCT has attended. It was at a similar event in San Francisco that Plumas County first caught the attention of PBS’s “Viewpoint,” hosted by Dennis Quaid, the organization said. “Cultivating the media takes time, but between events like this, press releases and advertising, Plumas County is getting noticed as a wonderful destination in California,” Sansone said.
The organization stressed that, while strategic marketing is not a “quick fix,” slow and steady work will keep Plumas County visible in key media markets. Last year Channel 10 based in Sacramento did a feature on Christmas tree cutting in the area, and the San Francisco Chronicle highlighted Plumas County for it’s fall foliage. Plumas is also featured on the cover of the Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association newsletter. “We definitely are becoming the squeaky wheel getting recognition through our campaigns,” says Sharon Roberts, board member and chair of marketing.
