County public safety measure likely to fail

Plumas elections office reports Nov. 5 results

A Plumas County ballot measure to raise money for public safety was going down to resounding defeat Nov. 5 in unofficial election results.

Voters rejected County Measure D by 3,981 no votes to 3,860 yes votes. The proposal to authorize a special three-fourth percent transaction required a two-thirds majority to pass.

The Plumas County Elections Office released its unofficial election results for the Presidential General Election at 8:14 p.m. Nov. 5, among the earliest returns reported in California.

Of the county’s 29 precincts with a total of 13,687 registered voters,  8,443 or 61.69% voted in this election.

Eastern Plumas Health Care District incumbents Paul Swanson MD and Linda Satchell retained their seats on the board. Swanson garnered 1,505 votes; Satchell had 1,475. In the race to fill two board positions, Leora Sapir received 1,241 votes.

Plumas votes for national, state offices

For United States president, Plumas County cast 4,781 votes for Republican candidate Donald Trump and 3,328 votes for Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate. The county voted with the nation in the unofficial vote count.

In the race for United States Senator from California, Republican candidate Steve Garvey outpolled and Democratic candidate Adam Schiff 5,027–3,344 among Plumas County voters. Schiff was elected by California voters.

United States Representative 3rd District Republican incumbent Kevin Kiley received 5056 votes to Democratic challenger Jessica Morse, who received 3173 votes in Plumas County. Kiley retained his seat if the unofficial count holds.

Plumas voters endorsed California State Senator District 1 Meagan Dahle, a Republican. She received 5616 votes to candidate David Fennell, also a Republican, who received 1,440 votes.

District 1 member of the California State Assembly will likely be Heather Hadwick, a Republican. She received 4,417 votes to the 2,195 votes cast for Tenessa Audette, also a Republican.

Plumas County voted no on all of the California propositions except:

Proposition 35: permanent funding for Medi Cal Health Care Services, with yes votes at 4,764 and no votes at 3,254.

Proposition 36: increase penalties for theft and drug trafficking with yes at 5,892 and no votes at 2,205.

All of the tallies released Nov. 5 are unofficial, said Plumas County Elections Official Marcy DeMartile. The next update will be Nov. 15.  She reported approximately 800 ballots with signatures checked and verified and ready for counting. Her office will continue to process daily mail as it comes in with valid post marks up to Wednesday, Nov. 13.

“We have 93 provisional ballots remaining to process,” DeMartile said late on Nov. 6. The elections office is still waiting on signature verification statements from many voters in order to process their returned ballot envelopes.

“We will be done with all election processes, including the 1% manual tally, by Friday, Nov. 22,” said DeMartile.
