Sierra birdwatchers and nature lovers are invited to join award-winning author, artist, and educator John Muir Laws at the new Sierra Valley Nature Center in Beckwourth to celebrate the publication of “The Laws Field Guide to Sierra Birds” with a talk, reception, and book signing Saturday Nov. 16 from 2:30-4:00 p.m.
Laws is the author of several books, including “The Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada,” and a leader in the nature journaling movement. Featuring all new illustrations of more than 200 species, this updated guide is a resource for novice and advanced birders alike. All fifth graders in Plumas County use Laws’ “Sierra Birds” book in their year-long focus on the birds of the region.

Both in-person and livestream tickets are available at $30 per person, and all tickets include a signed copy of the book. The in-person event will also include a catered reception, organizers said.
Co-sponsored by Wild Wonder Foundation, Heyday Books, and the Feather River Land Trust, this event is a fundraiser for a new short documentary created by the Wild Wonder Foundation. The film focuses on an outdoor education program in Plumas County in which nature and nature journaling are an integral part of school for every child in the district. The goal of the film is to help inspire similar programs across the U.S. and around the world.
