PDH skilled nursing facility to open this summer

Plumas District Hospital has announced plans to open its new skilled facility on Bucks Lake Road next summer. The opening marks the end of the years-long effort to close a gap in Plumas County’s health care services that began nearly a decade ago, when Quincy’s nursing home closed.

The closure forced area residents to seek long-term care outside their local community, often several hours away from family and friends.

PDH plans to provide 24-hour personalized care for people who can’t live independently. The new facility, opposite the hospital, will also include social and recreational activities, meals and other medical services to improve the quality of life for its patients.

“This facility is a true community project, made possible through the collective efforts and support of our local partners and residents,” said JoDee Read, chief executive officer of Plumas District Hospital. “Our new skilled nursing facility will be a vital resource, providing long-term care that honors the needs of our community, while also opening doors to meaningful career opportunities in health care.”

The new facility will also offer year-round employment opportunities with full- and part-time jobs. Certified nursing assistants, licensed vocational nurses and registered nurses will make up roughly half of the job opportunities. There will also be positions in food services, maintenance, housekeeping and other health care support personnel.

PDH works closely with local educational institutions to develop relevant career and technical education that prepares local youth and adults for nursing careers. “We believe that investing in health care infrastructure is essential to the resilience of our community,” said Read. “This skilled nursing facility reflects our ongoing commitment to improving both health outcomes and economic opportunities for our residents.”

Most services will be covered through Medi-Cal’s long-term care benefits. Since Jan. 1, 2024, Medi-Cal no longer considers assets when determining eligibility. The change in Medi-Cal benefits helps cover services in a skilled nursing facility or nursing home to help make long-term care more accessible.
