Chester Park’s Skating Rink is a winter community focal point, attracting visitors from as far as Susanville, Chico and Redding. The rink, a little smaller than a basketball court, is in Chester’s recreation center next to the Feather River.
“The best part of the rink is seeing kids have a good time,” said Anne Kassebaum, executive director of Lake Almanor Area Chamber of Commerce, which manages the skate rink.
On New Year’s Eve the Almanor Chamber is hosting a gala skating event from 4 to 9 p.m.. It will feature music, a firepit and hot beverages, with skating amid the lights of the holiday tree.
“It’s a very family oriented event, Kassebaum said.
The chamber used funds from its Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Dixie Fire payment to purchase the rink. The funds were specially allocated for business, tourism and recreation. Chester Elks Lodge and other community members volunteer annually to set up and take down the rink, said Kassebaum.
Several local businesses sponsor the rink, and others donate services. Among them are WiFi and water, from Mount Lassen Community Church; fencing, from Ayoob’s; trash removal, through Cravings; and propane, from Ed Staub and Sons. The Almanor Foundation accepts public donations to the skating rink.

Two to three seniors from Chester Junior-Senior High School comprise the skating rink’s paid staff. Staff light the tree, and set up fire pits, music, and chairs before skaters arrive. Lexi Nashlund, one of the Chester High School staffers, said she is excited to work with friends at the rink.
The rink’s synthetic surface requires a little extra care. In addition to shoveling, the rink is also treated with a Zamboni and glycerin.
The rink is open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., and Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.. The last Friday skate is Jan. 3, 2025. The rink will also be open Jan. 20 from noon to 4 p.m. for the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The last day of the skate season is Feb. 23.
A 45-minute skating session costs $5 and includes skate rental. School groups interested in a field trip can make reservations on the Lake Almanor Area Chamber of Commerce website.

Everyone who enters the rink should wear skates to keep the surface clean. Skates of all sizes and children’s skate stairs are available at the rink, so very young children can join in the family fun. Kids twelve and under must be supervised by an adult. All skaters must complete a liability waiver.
Whether you’re volunteering, supervising, or skating, come to the rink for a good time, said Kassebaum. “We hope to see you there.” said Kassebaum.
