Four Plumas County high school students shared their opinions about how artificial intelligence will shape the future of their day-to-day lives and the human experience generally.
The essays they wrote made them winners of the League of Women Voters of Plumas County annual Nancy Lund Essay Contest. Eligible to ninth- through twelfth-grade students throughout the county, this year’s contest drew 28 entries.

Kate Henson, a senior at Portola Junior-Senior High school, won the grand prize in the 11th- and 12th-grade category. In the category for ninth- and tenth-graders, the grand prize winner was Makiah Jensen, a sophomore at Indian Valley Academy.
Clare Churchill, representing the Plumas league chapter, presented them with checks for $250 at the Plumas County Board of Supervisors meeting Feb. 4.
Honorable Mention winners were Adria Black, a junior at Quincy Junior-Senior High School, and Portola High sophomore Olivia T. Carr. Each received a check for $150.
All four students read their essays to the supervisors, who listened intently. The essay contest is one of many ways the League of Women Voters works to promote civic involvement in the processes of democracy. The organization also sponsors forums for candidates running for local offices.
